Field note
Read a FIFO payslip without guesswork
A practical order for checking dates, ordinary hours, penalties, allowances, gross pay, and the difference from your estimate.
Check the pay-period dates before the numbers. A shift near the boundary may belong to the next payslip, even when it was part of the same swing.
Next, compare ordinary hours and overtime hours. Then check penalties and allowances by name. Different payroll systems group these lines differently, so use the total only after the parts make sense.
A difference is a prompt to inspect the inputs, not proof that payroll is wrong. Keep the original payslip and ask your employer or an adviser if the rules remain unclear.
